#4 - The Challenges An Airline Captain Faces
Summary
Today, I am joined by my old friend Leo Nugent.
Leo is a training captain on the Boeing 737 for a major airline in the UK, as well as the BALPA (British Airline Pilots Association) representing the pilots he works with at the company.
Leo and I met on our commercial training course at Oxford Aviation Academy about 24 years ago.
Our paths crossed professionally about eight years later when I joined the same airline as Leo.
Leo was by then a captain on the Boeing 737 when I joined as a First Officer, so we had the interesting dynamic of flying together with different levels of authority. I remember performing the worst of my landings in a jet aircraft with him into Kos one night - it was a very humbling experience!
Leo’s experience as a union representative offers immense value for all who are committed to developing healthy mindsets and emotional and spiritual connections.
We discuss the importance of teamwork, emotional understanding, and authenticity in aviation.
We emphasise the need for pilots to establish a flow state in the cockpit and develop strong communication and trust with our team members.
We also highlight the value of learning from mistakes, embracing feedback, and continuously improving.
The conversation touches on the challenges of leadership, the pressure of perfection, and the superficiality of social media.
Overall, the conversation emphasises the importance of connection, resilience, and personal growth in the aviation industry, which as always, can be applied to any stage in life, be it professionally or personally.
